1 Out Of 3 Queries In Google AI Mode Show Ads, Says Study

Google AI Mode Ads Study

A recent study conducted by SE Rankings came up with some eye-opening stats about the ads appearing in Google AI mode.

The central point of the conclusions they arrived at was 1/3rd of the query responses in Google AI mode contain Ads.

Here is an in-depth analysis of this study, starting with its key inferences.

What The Study Says?

The study analysed 50,032 commercial keywords linked to 20 niches. Out of them, 14,733 responded with an ad, making around 29.45% or roughly 30%.

Other key takeaways from the study are:

  1. 3/10 ads have a single advertiser. The rest have 2 competitors.
  2. 2x more ads in high CPC keywords.
  3. Ad frequency varies from niche to niche.
  4. Some advertisers have more prominence than others.
  5. 85% of advertisers appearing in AI mode are invisible on normal organic searches.

Although Google has not provided any concrete procedure or format for such ads on AI features, this study brings more clarity to the trends.

Google has been working on this front to simplify user experience. Another noteworthy development in this domain is that Google has tightened its ad closure norms, targeting AI content in ads.

The Possible Impact

The most expected impact of the expansion of Google Ads in AI mode will be enhanced brand reach and more clicks. Although platforms like ChatGPT are also incorporating ads, Google Ads still dominates in the field.

Google explains its relevance in AI mode through providing user-specific ads, supporting the brand’s trust through the answers, and raising conversions.

Jay Mac, Google Ads expert, tried working with the ChatGPT ads but ultimately inferred Google Ads as a much better option considering the conversions.

Considering the content trends, we can say that AI and Ads are going hand in hand, i.e., AI integrating into Ads (through AI MAX) and Ads integrating into AI (through AI mode).

How the SEO Community Reacted?

Mordy Oberstein, brand strategist and SEO, has applauded this analysis and also supports the fact that AI platforms will redirect to ads to generate revenue.

Not just that, Brodie Clark, a popular SEO consultant, has pointed out how the ad positioning in the Google AI mode has changed. Earlier, the sponsored ads used to be at the end of the response, but now they appear stuffed in the answer.

This points toward a more comprehensive amalgamation of ads in the AI responses.

Closing Remarks

Considering the current trend, we can hope for a wider presence of Google Ads in other AI features such as Google Search Live, Gemini, etc providing a new domain to attract customers and drive sales. If these assumptions are realized, brands will get more channels for building business apart from organic search ads.
