Users use AI more rather than visiting sites, and after Google started answering itself using its data scrapers and showing results in search bars, advertisers and publishers are worried about their revenue and profits. So Google decided to start paying publishers for contributing to AI answers.

Google introduced the change a few months ago and upgraded its search bar with search results, and after that, it started showing other websites on Search Engine Results Pages. Most of the people trust Google more than other common websites they read and find information on, so engagement, traffic, and ad clicks have become very less.

And publishers, website owners, and advertisers have worried that Google is becoming a middleman now.

Why It Is Necessary to Pay Publishers

Yes, as you know, if you search on Google with your query, it shows you the result itself rather than showing the SERP first. That’s why fewer people visit other sites, and that results in less traffic to sites.

Old and reputed sites got hurt by AI and then got hurt by Google search results. Publishers write content so people read and get information, and some money comes into their pockets too.

But when no one visits their site, how do they become popular and valued by the audience? The audience doesn’t even know where they are getting the information.

Everyone can see in the Search Console that sites are getting impressions, but clicks are dropping.

What this means for SEO and Organic Reach

For many years, publishers created content that helped search engines and advertisers find leads and businesses to explain their services.

The reward for them is the traffic they are getting, and the appreciation and satisfaction after seeing their content are useful, and earning from them keeps them working.

AI changes everything, and users do the query and find useful information extracted from their write-ups, but they are not getting traffic or clicks on the ads shown on their websites. Before this, users needed to visit different websites to get the overall information. And two or three sites got profit from one search.

Google AI Publisher Payments News

Publishers are continuously worrying and keep talking on different platforms, so Google has listened to them, and it is testing this in Google Search Console.

There is a new concept that has come up in the news: Google can pay AI Publishers for their site writeups who contribute to generating the AI answers.

Yes, you heard right: Google decided to provide direct payments for its AI Publishers.

Content generator tools need prewritten articles to extract information from using a scraping method that involves publishers. Google also needs fresh data, and if publishers stop writing new, fresh content, the internet will be filled with old information only.

What is the Google AI Contribution Pilot?

Google is trying to test and get the way to analyse how much of the contribution comes from the website to the AI-generated answers. On June 18, Google said that they are trying to make a value exchange model to provide value to the publishers for their fresh content.

Gemini, AI Overviews, and AI Mode are covered in this plan for now.

The AI performance report is going to help publishers see how much their contribution is being used.

And the AI contribution is for testing and paying for their content contribution. The AI Publishers can get their payments from Google after these tests.

How AI Contribution Pilot Works for You

This does not mean that if your small data or a link appears in the result, then you get paid. Your content and information help AI generate answers; then your contribution gets the value.

Example: if any one search a query and AI generates an answer for that query, and four websites are involved in this answer generation, then;

The first website that helps to make the structure and provide more details is rewarded more.

The second website may provide information and details around that structure and may be rewarded less.

But the other two websites that take a small part in it, can be helped for links or small details, are rewarded with nothing.

How Much You Get Paid

This is not going to make it easy for Google to calculate how much AI is extracting from which websites because it’s scraping from many sources like websites and forums.

There are so many things happening on the internet around this. Here’s what different sources are reporting:

Final Words

Google always wants its users to get accurate information, fresh content, and more relevant content so that people stick with it for years. Advertisers spend so much effort and money on advertisements on websites to show their products and services to the interested audience already visiting websites.

If publishers stop publishing fresh ideas, concepts, and tones according to the readers’ demand. AI keeps scraping old information. So it’s also required for Google to work in this upcoming upgrade. So that’s why Google decided to start paying publishers for their contributions to AI answers.
