Google Explains Several Ways Website Owners Can Control What Appears in Google Search in its official Search Central documentation. You can use a noindex rule, password protection, and crawling restrictions to manage your content visibility. The documentation was updated on 21 October 2026 and added how you can control search snippets and manage your site inclusion in Google generative AI search control features.

How Can Website Owners Control Google Search Results
Google has provided website owners with methods to control what they want to hide from search results. The page now also lists the robots meta tag, data-nosnippet, X-Robots-Tag, and the Search generative AI control.
Noindex Rule
The noindex robots meta tag prevents a page or other supported content from appearing in Google Search Results. But the content can still be accessed from a direct URL from other pages.
Robots.txt
Use robots.txt to block Googlebot from crawling image and video files. Google only indexes images and videos that Googlebot is allowed to crawl, so blocking them in robots.txt keeps them out of Search.
Password Protection
Confidential and private content can be protected with a password so only authorized users can access that content. This way, that content is removed when it appears somewhere in the results.
Search Snippet Control
The robots meta tags, data-nosnippet, and also the X-Robots-Tag can limit and control how your website content is presented in the Google search results, depending on your implementation.
Delete the Content
Removing the content from a website is the most effective way to ensure it does not appear anywhere. Also, you can request removal through the Google removal process. This is applicable for all content types.
Opt out of Specific Google Properties
You can exclude your content from Google Shopping, Google Hotels, and vacation rentals.
Control Content in AI Search Features
The documentation also explains how you can manage your site’s inclusion in Google generative AI search features. This is the AI mode control.
Why Restrict Content
Google provided three reasons to restrict your content.
- When you want to restrict some confidential data to your users who visit your website.
- You want to help Google focus on your website’s important pages only. This is useful for large sites that have duplicate content.
- Some websites have profile creation and content posting options available on their website, which lead to low-quality junk content.
What This Means for SEO
When you block unwanted pages from being crawled, the crawlers have a better path to find the content you want to show to your users, which improves SEO. Choose these methods according to your requirements, and limit your data to potential users for important private data and media files, keeping them out of search.
