In a recent development, Google AI Overviews top stories carousel has been rolled out in the US.

The ultimate aim, as conveyed by Google, is to make it easier for users to explore the web.

Although it has been restricted to some territories, a couple of related pointers are required to be learnt and considered to make further changes in SEO and GEO strategies.

What Is the Top Stories Carousel in Google AI Overviews?

The top stories carousel in AI overviews has been appearing in the search pages in the US. It has been reported to be appearing in mobile searches, which means it might be a pilot project and may get a global release in the future.

The carousel will show options of top trusted references (as per Google) to assist users in reading some well-explained content on the query.

In a blog titled “New ways to find your favorite sources and original content in AI Search” released in May 2026, Google has explicitly mentioned that:

“Now, for some searches when you have a question about a developing topic, you’ll start seeing a prominent carousel, which will also highlight your Preferred Sources.”

See what it looks like.

How Will the Top Stories Carousel Affect Publishers?

Google says this will improve the visibility of valuable content. This will ultimately elevate traffic to dependable sources.

Earlier, users used to search a query and find an AI overview right at the top, which usually solves their doubt.

But now the trustworthy sources in the carousel in the AI overviews will make users trust those content pieces and will definitely raise the probability of them opening one of those pages.

The point here is that only a few posts will appear in the carousel, which makes the competition tougher to grab that key position.

Google’s blog also mentions adding “Highly Cited” badges to more content pages on search results in order to help the user trace which pages are being considered and trusted by people.

This batch will look like the one seen in the picture below.

Similar steps have been taken by Google in preceding months, such as Google’s SEARCH LIVE for Conversational Results and improvements in Google image searches, all indicating a simplified search experience.

What Do Digital Marketers Say?

John Shehata, CEO and Founder of NewzDash and GDdash, has applauded this move and predicted:

“If this becomes more common, AI Overviews may shift from being just an answer engine to becoming Google’s new homepage for multiple search verticals. ”

Linking these developments, Mark Williams, Director at Candour, stated that those optimizing for Google AI features might also lose their position in the top stories carousel.
