How AI Chooses Local Businesses: SEO Strategies for Google AI & ChatGPT

SEO Strategies for Google AI & ChatGPT

Small businesses run best when they are recognised locally, and digital presence is the new key driver for it.

Even Hubshot has revealed that the”near me” searches for clothes on Google have surged by 600%.

Such AI local business search queries make a great opportunity to get a thrust to your business.

However, understanding the fundamentals and key suggestions is vital before diving headfirst into making a strategy for it.

How AI Chooses Local Businesses?

The AI search engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity are not ranking platforms, but are decision-makers and information providers.

They search the most appropriate answer to your query, extract the relevant answers for it, and present them systematically, with the most relevant links embedded in those responses.

The major challenge is that Google ranks the relevant pages in a finite page list. But AI chatbots show a few links supporting their answers, constricting the scope of being visible in AI responses.

This has saturated the competition to the next level.

Here is a diagrammatic illustration of how Google search and LLMs work to extract the responses.

1. The Overall Rapport is a Non-negotiable Factor

You know that AI agents use multiple sources to collect information, like Google, Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube, etc. How your business is performing beyond Google is what makes them trust your brand. This means your overall authority, not just focused on Google.

Jamie Stenton, a Digital Marketing Expert, calls it the “Digital Noise”, which cumulatively covers your blog profiles, testimonials, backlinks, PR etc and is pivotal in attracting the attention of LLMs.

This helps businesses to harvest the gains from Agentic Commerce Protocols like ACP and UCP to drive sales right through the LLM interfaces.

2. Reviews Do Matter

How people react to your service is what the AI chatbots observe to get you ranked. It doesn’t just mean generic reviews like “Great Service”, “fast and reliable,” etc., but the productive ones that provide a detailed experience for the visitors and customers.

Marcus Sheridan, a well-known content marketing expert, is of the firm view that reviews widely impact your brand visibility over ChatGPT. In a LinkedIn post, he said:

“Negative Reviews on Google have a MASSIVE effect on whether or not ChatGPT recommends your business.”

Here, the review platforms like Google Reviews, Trustpilot, Capterra, etc are a great resource to reap.

3. Brand Maturity is Also Considered

The AI agents also prefer businesses with an established identity and consistent performance. If the brand shows a fragmented approach, misleading information, or inconsistent presence, it won’t perform well on ChatGPT, Google AI, and other similar AI platforms, irrespective of its ranking on Google SERPs.

It also means staying consistent across all the channels you are present on, such as NAP consistency across Google Maps, Google My Business, LinkedIn, etc.

Brad Brewer, the Founder and CEO of Agentic Hospitality, has affirmed the importance of Google Business Profile in getting cited in ChatGPT results.

Some of the excerpts from his LinkedIn post are:

  • ChatGPT is now sourcing Google My Business Places API data to answer local and map-based prompts.
  • GBP is acting as a trusted, structured local index.
  •  If your GBP data is incomplete, inconsistent, or generic, you are invisible at the moment of intent.
  • Chains with clean, consistent GBP data across locations are being surfaced disproportionately.

4. Give Super Specific Content

Don’t just put content on site because you should. Your content should be precise, to the point, and most importantly, skimmable to allow the AI chatbots to extract the important parts and cite them in their response.

This also includes using headings, bullet point lists, tables, and concise summaries.

Avoid long text blocks and focus on topical clarity.

Also link your content with other trusted sources in your industry to convey your presence in that particular business field.

In a blog, Chris Raulf, A Globally Recognized AI SEO Expert, has stated the opinions of Eric Elkins, a celebrated SocialMedia Marketing Strategist. The blog mentions that Eric opined that:

Final Words

Although AI local business searches are dominating over LLMS, Google is still the foundation for getting the brand visible on chatbots and other LLMs. If your page is not indexed on Google or your GBP is not updated, the likelihood of your business being cited will further reduce.

Again, SEO will still remain relevant for AI presence and will also form the foundation of the brand’s digital footprint.
