In August this year, Productrise conducted research and posted its insights in a blog titled “Google AI Mode shows the same products 21.6% more expensive than traditional search,” which inferred that the same product is showing a higher price in AI Mode than in the product carousel in SERPs.
The analysis has also provided some groundbreaking revelations that are necessary to restructure SEO strategies, especially for ecommerce businesses.
All About Google AI Mode Product Carousel Study
Productrise analysed 2 million product listings through 100,000 Search pages and AI Mode responses between 9- 31 August.
It was done by executing queries for the same product on Google Search and AI Mode at the same time. During these examinations, the product price was found to be 21.6% higher on AI Mode than the SERPs product carousels.
But there are certain instances where the AI Mode product price was lower than the search results product carousel. However, the gap between those prices was lower, i.e., a difference of just 11.9%.

Another key point observed by the study was that 1.28% of products appeared in AI mode and SERPs for the same query at the same time.
The study also says that:
“AI Mode makes up just 12.3% of all the products shown, an average of 3.9 products versus 27.8 in traditional search.”
The conclusions provided by the research are even more amazing. It says:
“The number shoppers see first is the number most will act on, and in AI Mode that number tends to be higher.”
This means that people trust what they see at the top and tend to buy it more than those below, and this trend is seen to be even stronger in AI Mode.
It became a more serious matter to consider after Nick Fox, Senior Vice President of Knowledge & Information at Google, said that Google AI sends billions of clicks to websites.

The Digital Marketer’s POV
Brodie Clark has applauded the study and has also affirmed its facts. One of his comments is worth mentioning here.
Lindsey V., a renowned Growth & Performance Marketing Leader, has quoted this study in a LinkedIn post and provided some key suggestions regarding it. She recommended:
Pull the Merchant Center brand report for AI Mode and look at attribute completeness, because a sparse feed can’t be picked with confidence. Then read your product pages the way the model does and ask whether there’s a reason to choose you that isn’t the number.
Wrap up
The insights from the Google AI Mode product carousel study depict the variation between the AI mode and SERPs that can definitely interfere with user decision-making and ultimately temper the competition among the potential sellers. This is a serious issue after the SE ranking conducted a study revealing that 1 Out Of 3 Queries In Google AI Mode Show Ads.
If it is so, then the need for true and impactful SEO and GEO techniques is the need of the hour.
