This feature was introduced after running trials since December last year.

Here is a concise account of Google Search Console Social Media Platform Properties and how it can benefit content creators.

What Are Social Media Platform Properties in Google Search Console?

On 7th July this year, Google posted a blog titled “See how content from social and video platforms performs on Google Search,” announcing the rollout of Google Search Console Social Media Platform Properties.

It will have certain key metrics to allow users to measure how their content is performing in Google Search and Discover.

  1. Performance Report: This report will show stats related to total clicks, impressions, and some other metrics. It comes with filter and export features to enhance the usability of the provided figures.
  2. Insights Report: It provides insights about how people are discovering your content, the top-performing content, and current traffic trends that your posts are attracting.
  3. Achievements: This section will help you learn about what milestones you have achieved in the past 28 days, like reaching a specific click threshold from Google Search or Google Discover.

Currently, it supports the following platforms:

  • Instagram
  • TikTok
  • X
  • YouTube

In toto, it simply means that when your Instagram post or YouTube video appears in Google Search results or Google Discover for any query, it will be counted as an impression, and if it is clicked and played by the user, it will be considered one click.

It is the second development in GSC after Google’s New Generative AI Performance Report that shows how content is performing on AI overviews and AI mode.

How Can Social Media Creators Benefit From Google Search Console?

Google platform properties are a much-applauded feature and can be used by content creators to enhance their content reach and impact.

Here is how they can make the most of it.

  1. Finding Which Format Works: If your reels are getting a better response than YouTube videos, then people might understand your product in a few words. But if your videos are getting clicks, then people are seeking its in-depth details. Choose the format accordingly.
  2. Selecting the Right Platform: See which platform is responding better to your content. Focus more on it while applying its learnings to other platforms.
  3. See the Actual Reach: The impressions and clicks will assist you in understanding if your content is relevant and helpful. If your impressions and clicks are relatively low, try to design a more impressive thumbnail.
  4. Understanding What People Are Searching: The query section of the metrics reflects what people have searched that led to your content appearing in the search results. This will give you an understanding of the algorithm and will help you make a strategy for upcoming content.

The Digital Marketer’s Opinions

“With this release Google is making something explicit that many in our industry still resist: Your SEO doesn’t start and end with Google or your website. Search discovery is fragmented and SEO is about optimizing where your audience searches for you.”

Neil Patel just gave an eye-opener about Google platform properties by saying:

“Now social content is search content.”
